The Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential, earned by passing exam PL-300, is the gold-standard certification for Power BI professionals. It validates the full workflow, preparing, modelling, visualising and securing data, and carries a real salary premium. Here is how to approach it in 2026.

What the exam covers

PL-300 replaced the former DA-100 and measures four skill areas: prepare the data (25-30%), model the data (25-30%), visualise and analyse the data (25-30%), and manage and secure Power BI assets (15-20%). You should be comfortable with Power Query for shaping data and DAX for calculations.

The exam runs for around 100 minutes, is proctored, and may include interactive components such as case studies, drag-and-drop and lab-style tasks. It is rated moderate difficulty, with a first-time pass rate around 65-70% for well-prepared candidates.

A realistic study plan

If you have six or more months of hands-on Power BI experience, plan for four to six weeks of focused study. Without that experience, give yourself longer and prioritise building real reports over reading.

  • Week 1-2: Prepare and model data, Power Query transformations, relationships, the star schema and core DAX.
  • Week 3-4: Visualise and analyse, choosing visuals, interactions, bookmarks and DAX measures.
  • Week 5: Manage and secure, workspaces, sharing, row-level security and refresh.
  • Week 6: Practice exams, review weak areas, and rebuild a sample report end to end.

Resources that work

Use the official Microsoft Learn study guide and learning paths as your backbone, they are mapped to the exact skills measured. Supplement with the official practice assessment to gauge readiness, and build at least one full project so the concepts stick. Hands-on practice in Power BI Desktop is non-negotiable; PL-300 rewards people who have actually built reports, not just read about them.

Why it is worth it

The credential signals validated, end-to-end Power BI skills to employers and is increasingly expected for analyst and BI consultant roles. It is also a natural next step after AI-900 or DP-900 for anyone building a Microsoft data career, and it pairs well with the visual calculations and modelling skills in demand across 2026 reporting teams.
