Microsoft 365 Copilot has moved beyond single prompts. In 2026 its Researcher and Analyst agents let you delegate a whole task, gather sources, reason over your work content and return a polished deliverable, rather than answering one question at a time. Used well, they save hours on reporting and analysis.
From prompts to delegated tasks
A normal Copilot prompt is a one-shot exchange. An agent is different: you give it an objective and it works through multiple steps, consulting your emails, files, meetings and chats, plus the web where allowed, before producing a result. Microsoft describes this grounding across your work content as ‘Work IQ’.
The Researcher agent specialises in building thorough, well-sourced reports on a topic, and can now output them as a PowerPoint deck, a PDF, an infographic or an audio overview. The Analyst agent focuses on reasoning over data, working through a problem the way a skilled analyst would rather than returning a single figure.
Where they help most
- Producing a researched briefing on a market, competitor or regulation with citations.
- Turning a folder of project files into a structured status report or executive summary.
- Reasoning over a dataset to explain a trend, not just calculate it.
- Converting a long report into a presentation or audio overview for sharing.
Copilot Notebooks and a redesigned experience
Copilot Notebooks received a major refresh in 2026, bringing references, Copilot Pages content and chats into one side-by-side workspace, with a Quick Create feature and integrated Researcher and Designer agents. Copilot also gained persistent Memory so it no longer forgets context between sessions, model choice across leading models, and multimodal input where you can paste an image or speak a prompt.
The redesigned Microsoft 365 Copilot interface launched in late May 2026 pulls these capabilities together into a cleaner, more app-like home.
Use agents responsibly
Agents are powerful because they reach across your data, so governance matters. Confirm your organisation’s data protection and sensitivity-label policies are configured before rolling agents out widely. Always review agent output, especially anything citing external sources or feeding a decision. The goal is augmentation: let the agent do the legwork, keep human judgement on the result.
